You always need an image to upload in order to use PicMonkey. Even if you're wanting to design something from scratch--like making word art, creating your own watermark, or updating your blog design--you'll need a blank image to do so. There are two options: A solid image or an invisible / transparent image.
It's really easy to make solid and transparent blank images in PicMonkey. Here's how.
Creating Transparent + Solid Images in PicMonkey
Go to PicMonkey.com to get started. Select "create a collage."
If you have a common image size you use on your blog, go ahead and change the image dimensions. (A lot of my photos and word art tend to be 640x420 or smaller, so that's the size I made my blank images.) Otherwise, leave them alone and you can easily resize for each new image you create.

Once you've edited your dimensions for the collage (optional), save the blank image. Solid images can be png or jpeg.creating a transparent blank image in PicMonkey...
To make the background transparent (which will make the entire image transparent because there are no photos in the collage), go to "background" (the paint icon at the bottom), and put a check in the box next to "Transparent background." Now save the image. Transparent images need to remain saved as png in order to remain transparent.Using Transparent + Solid Images in PicMonkey
The next question is how to use these and what are they good for. When you're ready to create something from scratch, go to PicMonkey.com and upload your solid or transparent image (save it in an easy-to-access folder on your computer).
If you know the dimensions of the image you're needing to create, go to resize and enter your dimensions (uncheck "keep proportions" if needed). This is essential to set up first before adding any text or images. If you wait, anything you have already added will likely be distorted when you resize.

Solid blank images are great for creating word art or design elements for a blog. You can leave the background white and add text, or you can add a rectangle and resize it to cover the entire background then change the color however you want. Overlays and adding your own images provide endless options for creating all sorts of art. Images can be saved as png or jpg after editing; png creates crisper images especially if their is text.

I've already shown here >> how a transparent image can be used to create a watermark in PicMonkey. Transparent backgrounds are also handy for blog design elements like my circle profile photo, social media icons, and favicon (the green leaf in the Internet tab).
