Life was a bit of a mess last Friday. (Read about that "daughter-vomiting, son-throwing-yogurt-in-my-hair day" here.) I sat frozen in front of my laptop, attempting the words to describe it. A knock at the door interrupted my thoughts, and I answered it to find a friend, gifts in hand.
A "feel better soon" note inscribed in a 4-year-olds writing. Paints to use on the opposite side of the note that was a large outline of an alligator. And cupcakes, because Brylee getting sick halted plans for celebrating my birthday with a few friends.
After she left, I took the goodies to the table and looked on with misty-eyes and a smile. That was my first glimpse of light on that physically and emotionally draining day.
But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
{1 John 3:17-18}That is what shining our lights is all about. Seeing a brother or sister in need, and opening our hearts to be God's love. Using whatever is at our disposal to help someone.
That is what "random acts of kindness" can do for strangers, family, friends, coworkers. A simple gesture to show we care, and perhaps to be the messenger carrying a reminder that Someone Greater cares, too.
