Meet Aubrey Leeker | photographer interview

I'm starting the third week of my photo-a-day resolution, which means another interview of an awesome photographer! The Leekers have captured some unique and fun weddings, taken some of the most fun portraits I've seen, and are awesome at enjoying local specialties of the place they live whether they're traveling in Asia or hanging out right here in the Midwest. Keep reading to learn from Aubrey, and check out their blog!

Tell us about yourself... (what do you do, where is home, what do you love?)

Hi all! I am a photographer working from Lincoln, Nebraska.  I get to work with my husband (Josh) every day from our home!  When I'm not working on our photography business I currently love sewing, painting projects, biking to the farmer's market, instagraming, thrift shopping, local parks, beating the heat at a local pool, and dreaming up a nursery for little Leeker!

How long have you been a photographer?

We started our business three years ago.  However, I've been taking photos since I was a little girl.  My first memorable photo shoot was of my awesome troll collection.  No joke.

What do you primarily photograph?

In our business we primarily photograph weddings with some portrait sessions and commercial shoots added to the mix.

Describe your beginner experiences with photography.

I grew up shooting film with a standard 35mm point and shoot camera.  I wish I knew what it was!  In college I got my first digital camera and I haven't looked back.  About six years ago I bought my first DSLR and taught myself all the way to where I am now.  I've never taken a photography class.  Practice. A lot of practice.

Which photo are you proudest of?

The photos I'm most proud of are the photos I have a vision for ahead of time.  I picture the light, the subjects, and the details.  I know how I want it to look and I make it happen.  I think it's a combination of determination and having things fall into place.

What type of camera(s) do you shoot with most?

Canon 5D mark ii

What is your favorite photo editing accessory/software?

Editing photos is not my favorite.  As far as overall editing software, I'm a huge fan of Aperture.  I love it's simplicity and organization.

What inspires you?

I love quirky, creative people and places.

What Web site, blog, or book do you reference most often?

I'm a huge DIY girl.  Lately I have been loving this blog ---> http://www.abeautifulmess.com/

Is there anybody or anything you would love to photograph?

I love travel photography!  I would love to camp/ explore along the Oregon coast, Zion Nation Park in Utah, Glacier Nation Park, and more.

How do you preserve/enjoy your personal photos?

Most of our time and energy goes into preserving wedding images for our clients.  I do love preserving our personal photos in creative ways around the house (from a framed collage to printed photo albums).

What advice do you have for a beginner like me wanting to improve personal everyday photos?

Practice. Practice. Practice.

One thing you're still learning, or feel like you're a "beginner" in...

Baking.  I make a mean chocolate chip banana bread and that is it.  I always burn cookies, etc.

If somebody said, "How can I be the next Aubrey Leeker" what would you say?"

Be yourself.  Do what you love!

Suggest one photo category/theme for my photo-a-day challenge in August...

Neighbor.  I really try and make an effort to get to know our neighbors.  I think more people need to make this a priority.  Get to know your neighbor... just don't be a creeper with a camera though.  Ha!
